a fountain of bass - surfboard fishing memories

One of the best days I had was a few years back, but I had paddled way out at Solana Beach, the same spot where there was a fairly recent shark attack.  We were probably close to a mile out, sitting in a school of anchovies, catching fish after fish.  I landed some big bass, a halibut, caught a couple of croakers, but I hooked into something that just took me for a ride.  Line peeled from my reel and did not stop.  In the middle of it all, a bait ball congregated at the surface, and there was just this thrashing fountain of bass, all breaching and churning the water, attacking this helpless dwindling ball of anchovies.  Everything started going for the bait, and I was sitting just three feet from it with dangling pink toes.  Next thing I look down and see huge shadows moving underneath me.

I lifted my feet out of the water as high as I could, then Pop!...I lost my big fish.  Fast and furious, whatever it was, it was gone.

Didn't matter though, 40lbs of bass in my bag and paddling a mile through shark infested waters was a great rush.
